We are very much minding the bullocks at the moment, especially after two broke through from next door and strolled into our greenhouse. After snacking on an olive tree and deciding a Mediterranean diet was not for them they left in disgust without, miraculously, leaving a trail of devastation behind them. I could go on, but first I would like to introduce ourselves:
We are Liz and Malcolm and have a small thatched cottage and 5 acres of land in the beautiful Devon countryside. We have lived here for 30 years. We bought a field (2.5 acres) first and the cottage a year later. The field had been a cornfield, intensively farmed and was pretty sterile and unable to support anything much in the way of wildlife. We used part of the field for our horticultural nursery and the rest we have been caring for in as wildlife friendly a way as possible: planting trees and hedges, creating ponds, planting wildflower meadows etc. etc.. This year we have inherited a further 2.5 acres, which we will treat in the same way, though we have a huge amount of rubbish to clear from it first. In recent years our efforts to encourage wildlife have really come to fruition. To name but a few we have slow worms, grass snakes and, we have recently discovered, dormice and hedgehogs! None of which were here when we started. We would like to share the story of our field (and our family) over the years and will keep you up to date with blogs and photos of current wildlife sightings or simply lovely views of our Devon countryside which we hope you will enjoy.
